A new 292-seat elementary school opened in Bayside Tuesday.
The school, located at the former home of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic school at 56-10 214th St., is one of 11 school buildings that opened across the city yesterday.
The School Construction Authority completed several additions as well as the Bayside school—including a 980-seat addition at P.S. 143 in Corona; a 548-seat addition at P.S. 129 in College Point; a 440-seat addition at P.S./I.S. 128 in Middle Village; and a 132-seat annex at P.S. 256 in the Rockaways.
The new Bayside school, P.S. 390Q, and the additions were all completed on time despite COVID-19 causing construction delays. The SCA put its longer-term projects on hold but made sure to open its 2020 projects on time.
“These new locations exemplify our deep-rooted commitment to provide our 1.1. million students with the best and safest learning environments,” said Lorraine Grillo, president and chief executive officer of the NYC School Construction Authority.
The new Bayside school includes 10 standard classrooms, 2 pre-K classrooms, 2 kindergarten classrooms, 2 special education classrooms, as well as a reading resource room and speech room.
The facility also contains a project room, music room, gymnasium, student cafeteria and a library. The project cost $14.3 million.
